Here at Knells tutoring, we offer a variety of services using only the best, research-based methods and curriculums.
At Knell’s Tutoring, we work with a systematic, Orton Gillingham approach to teach reading and spelling. It takes out the guessing work of learning the skill.
Many students with dyslexia do not have the natural ability to hear and manipulate sounds. This can make reading and spelling very challenging. For students in need of phonemic awareness, we use a curriculum called Foundation in Sounds.
Many students with dyslexia also have dysgraphia. For students who want to improve their handwriting, we will begin working with a curriculum called Handwriting without Tears.
Once students reach book 5 of the Barton curriculum, we will begin working on grammar and writing (not just spelling) using the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
During tutoring, students will practice reading decodable text. This means text that they have been taught the explicit skills to read. They will not be given any words that require guessing.
Starting in Book 5, students will begin learning the meaning of word parts to help increase vocabulary, especially of unknown words.
Lana and Shantell have worked as special education teachers for many years. We are happy to come to meetings as a guest to help guide parents through the process and advocate for your student's needs.
