About Us

Our Background

People with Dyslexia CAN read and spell, and do it well. When looking at the dyslexic mind, it is wired a bit differently which means we have to take a different approach to learning. The traditional methods don’t work on a non-traditional mind. At Knell’s tutoring, we do just that.

There is a methodology called Orton-Gilligham that teaches reading in a way that works for the dyslexic brain. It is a systematic way of teaching reading that builds on itself and takes the guessing out of reading and spelling. We use a curriculum called the Barton Reading & Spelling System that follows this. We go step by step to build up that knowledge so you'll be reading like a pro.

Our goal, as dyslexia tutors, is to get every student through the 10 books before reaching high school. This will give them the ability to read and write alongside their peers with ease. There is nothing more special than the gift of reading and spelling.

Meet the Team!

Lana Knell- Owner and tutor

Lana Knell

Barton Tutor and Owner

Hello! My name is Lana (Sounds like llama) and I am dyslexic. I’ve always considered that to be a gift. While it has created many obstacles, it has also provided me with many benefits.  Dyslexics are often creative and have a very visual mind. Because of this, I have been drawn to art and creating throughout my life. If it weren’t for my disability, I wouldn’t have this strength. It has also taught me compassion and understanding which has led me here getting to work with you.

I am a certified special education teacher and a dyslexia tutoring specialist. I have truly loved getting to know and help each of my students through the years.

I can’t wait to meet you and learn a bit about you and your students.

Shantell Owen- Barton Tutor

Barton Tutor

Hello! I’m Shantell. I'm a mom raising six amazing kids alongside a dog and a cat. As a former educator for a decade, I've delved into both special education and 5th grade, building a strong connection with neurodivergent kiddos—probably because I'm walking a similar path, having recently received a late in life diagnosis that I am autistic with ADHD, more commonly labeled AuDHD 😊.

My journey is about embracing my unique brain, and I'm excited to help others do the same. Reading is a true passion, grounded in the science of reading. Beyond the academic realm, my fascination lies in the complexities of the brain and mental health.

On a creative note, I'm the proud owner of a photography business, aiming to make the world of photography accessible to everyone. Looking forward to connecting and growing together!
